The state government of Tamilnadu launches a free bicycle scheme for Schedule Caste and Schedule Tribes students. Free Bicycle Scheme is launched by the chief minister O Paneerselvam for the SC/ ST students of session 2016-17.
The ruling All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK) launches free bicycle scheme for the SC/ST students of 11th class. The state government of Tamilnadu has allotted Rs. 243.96 crore to exchequer for free bicycle scheme.
Late AIADMK supremo Jayalalithaa had introduced this free bicycle scheme in the session of 2001-02 for SC/ST students of the state. Later this scheme was expanded to the students of those schools receiving financial assistance from the government.
At a function at the Secretariat today, Panneerselvam handed over the bicycles to seven students as part of kick-starting the scheme an official release said.
Adi Dravidar and Tribal Welfare Minister V M Rajalakshmi, Backward Classes and Minorities Welfare Minister S Valarmathi and senior govenrment officials were present there in the launching of the free bicycling scheme.
