The state government of Karnataka announces Laptop Bhagya Scheme to distribute the free laptops to the Schedule Caste and Schedule Tribes students of higher education courses. Over 36,000 Scheduled Caste and Scheduled Tribe students studying in professional courses will get laptops from the State government under the Laptop Bhagya scheme.
Laptop Bhagya Scheme is a new concept in higher education and there will be no income limit to take the laptop under this scheme for the SC/ST students. Higher Education Minister Basavaraj Rayaraddi said on Tuesday that the aim of the move was to help students use technology for their studies, especially those from engineering, polytechnics and government degree colleges.
The state government of Karnataka wants to ensure that students from these backgrounds get access to all facilities. The tender of the project Laptop Bhagya Scheme is expected to be called this week soon. The students will be given the laptops at the beginning of the new session i.e. next academic year.
The state government of Karnataka has allotted Rs. 112 crore for the Laptop Bhagya Scheme. As per the data available from the department, there are over 35,000 students who will benefit from this scheme. The laptops will cost around Rs 32,000 to Rs 35,000. The only condition that the students must fulfill to get the laptop is that they should belong to SC/ST communities. Only first year students will be given laptops under Laptop Bhagya Scheme.
The initiative of free Laptop Scheme is taken under the special component fund released from the government in the end of the November 2016. So the state government of Karnataka is going to distribute the free laptops to the students of SC and ST category. The free laptops under Laptop Bhagya Scheme will be given to only those students who are in first year in higher studies and belong to SC or ST category.
